    Illinois Valley Community College took a lot of heat when it was revealed last year it paid its attorney $680,000 to pursue a lawsuit over a dispute on an ethanol plant's property taxes. In February, New Jersey-based Federal Appraisal & Consulting filed a lawsuit in Peoria County Circuit Court that claims the college owes nearly $150,000, including interest, for costs associated with its appraisal of the plant.

    Caterpillar says it plans to close five plants, causing a net reduction of about 670 jobs in Illinois and several other states, as part of a broader cost-cutting campaign announced last year. The mining and construction equipment company will cut about 230 jobs for office and production workers at a major manufacturing campus in East Peoria, where Caterpillar says it's consolidating some manufacturing and transferring some work to outside contractors.
