    Rick Scardina first began playing bocce two years ago, when he was 68. He said his father used to play and when his brother-in-law, Ralph Mesa, a member of local league and current president of the Nevada County Bocce Club, invited him to join, he decided he would give it a try. Scardina continues to play today, because he enjoys both the camaraderie and competition.

    Charges against a Penn Valley man who allegedly robbed another man at gunpoint, as payback for a marijuana deal gone bad, were dismissed after the prosecution was unable to track down the victim for a hearing into the evidence. Joseph William Axtell, 59, did plead no contest to a probation violation, a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm, and was sentenced to 212 days with credit for time served.

    Two women pulled over on a traffic stop on the San Juan Ridge ended up in jail on a variety of charges, after deputies reportedly found a number of items associated with check forgery and identity theft in their vehicle. A Nevada County Sheriff's deputy was on patrol a little after midnight in the area of Highway 49 and Oak Tree Road, and noticed some vehicle code violations on the pickup truck, pulling it over, said Sheriff Keith Royal.
