    Three bills introduced by Assemblyman Fred Thiele Jr. and State Senator Kenneth LaValle have passed both the Assembly and Senate and would improve water quality if, as expected, they gain the signature of Governor Andrew Cuomo. The bills passed by "overwhelming margins," according to Mr. Thiele, are designed to promote water quality protection on Long Island: - One bill authorizes towns in the Peconic Bay Region Community Preservation Fund to establish a septic system replacement loan program using water quality monies from the fund.

    An elderly Mattituck man was pronounced dead at a local hospital after he was found unresponsive in a swimming pool Sunday, police said. They initiated CPR, which was continued by a responding police officer and members of the Mattituck Fire Department until he was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

    Southold police chief Martin Flatley said that "just about everybody" in the minivan was injured when the eastbound pickup truck crossed the lane into westbound traffic and hit it. Some of the injured were airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital while others were taken by ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center and Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport, he said.
