    There appears to be nothing out of the ordinary about Frank Peabody's 7-year-old beagles, Lilly and Daisy -- until you look at the underside of their big, floppy ears, where an inked identification number is still visible, but a little faded with time. Peabody had lost a beagle who was "literally the best friend I ever had, human or animal," when a friend said she could get him two beagles from the Massachusetts pharmaceutical lab where she worked -- two dogs that had spent the first two years of their lives in testing.

    Chhan Roeun, speaking through a translator, said she heard screaming in her neighbor's apartment at 171 Walker St. early Thursday morning, and when she went to see what was wrong she saw a man bleeding and unconscious on her neighbor's floor. Roeun had stumbled into the scene of what the Middlesex District Attorney's Office called "an apparent homicide," and said she was still feeling "shaky" and "scared" more than 12 hours later.

    A pair of Lowell men have been charged in connection with a fatal shooting in the city early Saturday morning, though neither is facing homicide charges, authorities said. In a joint press release issued Monday night, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Lowell Police Superintendent William Taylor confirmed that Christian Tripp-Kirwin, 21, of Lowell, and Joseph Luna, 21, of Lowell, will both be arraigned in Lowell District Court Monday and charged with one count of possession of a firearm without a license.
