    To the editor: We, the petitioners, stand by the stated intent of founder Zenas Crane and the many donors to the Berkshire Museum over its history. Crane established the museum as "an institution to aid in promoting for the people of Berkshire County and the general public the study of art, natural science, the culture history of mankind ."

    To the editor: People of good will and intent charged with responsibly managing the Berkshire Museum to benefit and serve the people of Pittsfield and beyond have, by their own admission, failed to effectively manage the museum's finances over an extended period of time. In an effort to solve this problem they have chosen to sell the most valuable parts of their collection - works by Norman Rockwell, Frederic Church, Albert Bierstadt, Alexander Calder, and other artists - to generate cash for support of operations.

    Despite tight finances that may force lawmakers to make wholesale budget revisions, senators on Wednesday night were in a giving mood, adding spending measures for anniversary celebrations in Peabody, Amesbury, Mendon and Westfield as well as a soccer program in Lawrence, a winter tourism campaign in Hull, the MetroWest Food and Music Festival and a theater in Hyde Park. As they make their way through hundreds of amendments to a $40.3 billion spending plan built on shaky revenue estimates, state senators have added millions of dollars in new spending including earmarks they say support important local programs.

    So what do you do when you look at the world around you and what you see is testosterone on overdrive and creating the sort of posturing that's going on with North Korea and the show-off bombing in Afghanistan, as well as the biting the hand that feeds you stand-off against Putin in Syria, the installing of a family regime within the White House? What do you do when you just watch as forces beyond your control act out the modern American tradition of creating problems to halt any sort of progress and cause diversions that demand we never solve our problems, we just let them continually spiral out of control until we resent the problems that demand a solution? You turn inward, of course.
