    The City of Borger has submitted a federal grant for the 2018 Federal Railroad Administration's Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements program for a project to improve and enhance safety and security of the short-line rail system. The CRISI Grant provided by the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2017, funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation, is offering $65 million to be split nationwide to enhance infrastructure and safety improvements of railroad lines.

    "We have proposed to the City of Amarillo to build a 300 seat amphitheater downtown in a really lovely green space that would also include a Texas Panhandle Walk of Fame and a first responders memorial so we'd have several things going on at one time, this would be very much like a city park," said Wes Reeves, the chairman of the Friends of AJ Swope. Reeves says the AJ Swope Plaza would be something different for downtown that will include an area for outdoor concerts but also honor other notable people from the High Plains and first responders who died in the line of duty.
