    Officials have recovered the body of a 22-year-old man they say drove into the Matanuska River Saturday, the Palmer Police Department reported. According to an email Sunday morning from Palmer Police Chief Lance Ketterling, the body of Zachary T. Terry was recovered from the vehicle -- which had been estimated to be sitting 8 feet deep in the silty river -- at about 9:45 a.m. Mat-Su Borough fire, police and emergency crews and the water rescue team responded shortly before 11 a.m. Saturday to a report that someone had driven a car over an embankment and into the river north of Sherrod Elementary School in Palmer.

    Two Matanuska-Susitna Borough Assembly members are proposing a reduction in fees at the Palmer landfill after a recent increase sparked public outrage. Dan Mayfield, who represents Big Lake, and Vern Halter, who represents Willow and is running for borough mayor, are proposing a resolution to roll back increases that went into effect July 1. The increase nearly tripled some rates for trash disposal compared to last year, according to the resolution.
