    The operators of a Pacoima store are the subject of a lawsuit brought by the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office on Monday, June 12, for allegedly selling illegal or mislabeled pharmaceuticals Ducleria El Venado is run by Narcisco and Johana Gamez, although neither is licensed to sell pharmaceuticals nor is the business a pharmacy, according to City Attorney Mike Feuer. "We are not only trying to hold accountable the individuals we allege engaged in what we have set forth today, but we are trying to send a very strong message out to consumers of medications," Feuer said.

Actors James Edward Olmos and Jeri Ryan appeared at MEND's headquarters in Pacoima on Wednesday, May 10, along with the US Postal Service and National Association of Letter Carriers to urge people to place non-perishable food items by their residential mailboxes for the Stamp Out Hunger campaign, the "largest one-day food drive in the world" according to USPS.

    Nearly 400 students from a dozen Los Angeles Unified School District schools took over the Matador Gym at Cal State University Northridge on May 6 to compete in a daylong tournament to show their high-tech skills in coding, robotics and engineering. The elementary students and their creations were challenged by an obstacle course, follow-the-line, "space" challenges and "sumo" matches where robots went at it in combat.

    The American Red Cross Los Angeles Region and SoCalGas installed over 900 free ten-year lithium battery smoke alarms in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Pacoima on Saturday, April 29. The alarms were part of the Red Cross program PrepareSoCal, a multi-region campaign to address the needs of individuals and families to prepare for disasters, small and large, and to promote community resiliency within the most vulnerable communities. Red Cross staff and volunteers, along with trained bilingual local community volunteers, went to 231 homes to install the smoke alarms and provided more than 1,100 residents with home fire prevention and earthquake preparedness information to help get Pacoima better prepared for emergencies.

    The American Red Cross Los Angeles Region, in partnership with Southern California Gas, is offering free smoke alarms for Pacoima residents on Saturday, April 29. The alarms, which use lithium batteries, are guaranteed for 10 years. They will be handed out at the Hubert H. Humphrey Recreation Center, located at 12560 Filmore St. In addition, volunteers in teams of three will go to neighborhood residences and help install the alarms, at no charge.
