    ORMOND BEACH - If the first community meeting weighing a west-end rec center was an accurate gauge, more than half of residents in the area are highly interested. At least 60 people gathered at the Pathways Elementary School cafeteria Thursday night both to give suggestions and voice opposition to a possible community center that would service areas west of Interstate 95. While those who were against a parks project were vocal about it, a vast majority claimed they'd like to see some kind of activity center on the 20-acre, vacant parcel next to Pathways Elementary.

    Traffic was backed up Friday afternoon on Interstate 95 in both directions in the Ormond Beach area due to a dump truck fire. Emergency crews responded shortly after 1 p.m. to the scene of the fire in the northbound lanes, about a mile-and-a-half south of the U.S. 1 overpass, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.

    Three women and two men were arrested during an online sex sting targeting women who advertised on the escort section of backpage.com, according to the  Volusia County Sheriff's Office. The three women advertised using names like “Soul Snatcher” and “Porsche” while advertising on backpage.com, Sheriff's Office spokesman Gary Davidson wrote in a press release.

    Some of the cats at a residence in Daytona Beach escaped when the house they were in caught on fire Wednesday morning, but three of them were found dead inside the home, the Daytona Beach Fire Department said. When firefighters from Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach responded to the scene on Bel Aire Drive for a structure fire just before 9:45 a.m., the occupant of the house was already outside, according to DBFD spokesperson Sasha Staton.

    Ormond Beach leaders are considering building a multi-purpose community center west of Interstate 95, but they want to hear from residents to make certain that's what they want, too. The city will host a neighborhood meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, just next door to the proposed 20-acre site at the Pathways Elementary media center.  The Volusia County School Board owns the parcel, but according to the city, has no immediate plans to use it, so Ormond is looking to either create a shared-use arrangement or ask the board to deed the city the land.

    In 2007, the city paid $1.87 million for an aging, crime-ridden apartment complex just south of East International Speedway Boulevard, then demolished the buildings.  Six years later, the city sold the vacant lot in the 500 block of South Grandview Avenue to White Challis Redevelopment for $27,500. White Challis is owned by Jack White, who is married to Daytona Beach City Commissioner Kelly White.  But the $1.84 million gap between the city's purchase price and its sale price to White Challis hasn't added up to a financial bonanza for the developer.

    Daytona Beach police on Sunday responded to the 800 block of Mary McLeod Bethune Boulevard after two motorists were robbed of a total of $4,000 at gunpoint and the gunman opened fire at them from the parking lot of Pooh Bear's Car Wash, according to an arrest report. When police got there shortly after 2 p.m., the shooter had fled the scene, but his suspected accomplice was located and quickly apprehended.

    Local surfers remembered one of their own Saturday morning with a "paddle out" south of the Flagler Beach Pier in honor of Dave Dalecki, who was killed in a March 22 wreck on Interstate 95. The surfers paddled their boards past the break and came together to form a circle in remembrance of the married father of two sons. Dalecki, 47, owned Got Tools, an Ormond Beach home improvement company, for the last nine years.

    A Port Orange teenager was killed Friday night when his motorcycle struck a telephone pole on Atlantic Avenue in Ormond Beach. Ormond Beach police spokesman Keith Walker said Zachariah Warner, 18, was airlifted to Halifax Health Medical Center where he later died of his injuries.
