    The eighth annual Slim's Fishing Derby is scheduled for February 13 and 14 this year, though Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife biologist Greg Burr said he worries the derby, as well as others scheduled for the month of February, may have to be postponed or canceled. With temperatures reaching the mid-50s in many areas of the Blue Hill Peninsula and Deer Isle, the current ice conditions are pretty thin for this time of year and are treacherous on many lakes, according to Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife biologist Greg Burr via email Monday, February 1. "Some of the larger, deeper lakes and their thoroughfares, such as First Toddy Pond in Orland, have open water and are unsafe to fish around," said Burr.
