Maddigan and illustrated with numerous historic images, the volume explores the unique origins of Onset, Massachusetts, and the rapid rise and controversial decline of Spiritualism in “the Spiritualists' Summer Home by the Sea.” In 1877, a group of eastern Massachusetts Spiritualists, those who believed in communication with the dead, held a camp meeting in a wooded grove on the shores of Onset Bay in Wareham.

    The selectmen Tuesday night brought Onset's Wicketts Island one step closer to being turned into a public aquatic education and recreation center by approving the Buzzards Bay Coalition's request for a conservation restriction on the property. Coalition president Mark Rasmussen explained to the board that its vote gives the coalition the approval to "gift"the property, which the organization owns and will develop, to the town under the restriction, which by law must be placed on such a parcel.

    While some local fireworks displays have been canceled or put on hold, the city announced its annual Fourth of July celebration will light up New Bedford Harbor with the help of a $10,000 donation from Hawthorn Medical Associates. "We want people to come downtown, to enjoy a wonderful fireworks display generously underwritten by Hawthorn Medical and to have a great time and to spend some of their money in our restaurants and shops in our downtown area," Mitchell said at a press conference announcing the display at City Hall Wednesday.

    Town administrator Derek Sullivan announced to the selectmen Tuesday night that a search committee consisting of library stakeholders including trustees and employees whittled down nine applicants for the job of Wareham's Director of the Free Public Library to six and finally two top candidates. Sullivan said Carlozzi has accepted the position at a starting salary of $63,085.97 and is expected to assume the job on July 1. Sullivan asked the board to place a vote to ratify the hiring decision on next week's selectmen meeting agenda.
