    Beachgoers discovered the body of a man in the surf near Coast Guard Beach on St. Simons Island late Friday afternoon, said Brian Scott, chief of staff for the Glynn County Police Department. It appears he drowned, but an autopsy will be performed Monday at the GBI Crime Lab in Savannah to determine an exact cause of death, Scott said.

    The total expenses and revenues for the year will be about $46.5 million, and includes 3 percent across-the-board raises for all employees not currently in a probationary period, said Jim Drumm, city manager. Commissioners will further discuss the budget at work sessions Monday and Wednesday, with a public hearing June 20 and a final approval or denial vote June 27. Drumm said the property tax rate is not anticipated to increase, however, property owners may pay slightly more this year as property values rose about 1.5 to 2 percent on average citywide.

    The Glynn County Finance Committee recommended on Tuesday the Glynn County Commission approve more spending on 10 beach accesses on St. Simons Island, which are currently under repair. Public Works Director Dave Austin said the contractor performing the repairs, Dogwood Construction, wanted to put hurricane clips on the underside of the accesses so they can withstand greater stress.

    The Glynn County Finance Committee is expected to consider making a recommendation on a sidewalk project on South Harrington Road on St. Simons Island at its Tuesday Meeting. The project, to be paid for with $142,937 in Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax 2016 revenue, calls for a seven-foot wide sidewalk to be paved along the south side of the road from Frederica Road to Harrington Park, around 2,000 feet.

    The idea of the city of Brunswick building a conference center on the site of the old Oglethorpe Hotel in downtown Brunswick really worries me. The argument for building the conference center is standard - a conference center will provide strong economic juice to downtown Brunswick by bringing in visitors who will spend money at downtown shops and restaurants and by employing local folks who will spend money at downtown shops and restaurants.
