    A citizens committee overseeing Athens-Clarke County sales tax-funded projects learned Monday that a detour around the intersection of Whitehall Road and South Milledge Avenue, part of a major route into Athens from neighboring Oconee County, will be coming down three weeks ahead of schedule. Don Martin, manager of the county's Special-Purpose Local Options Sales Tax program, told the SPLOST 2011 Citizen Oversight Committee that work on the $561,701 project to improve sight lines - and thus, safety - at the southeastern Athens-Clarke County intersection is slated for completion on July 6, well ahead of the previously announced July 31 completion date.

Two volunteers with the Upper Oconee Watershed Network and a retired Oconee County high school science teacher took water samples on Friday from Calls Creek upstream and downstream of an Oconee County wastewater treatment facility which spilled partially treated wastewater into the creek at least twice in recent weeks.
