    The Cherokee Nation Tribal Council approved an $887 million comprehensive budget for fiscal year 2019 during its monthly meeting Monday. The budget includes an $11.6 million total increase for health centers in Jay, Muskogee, Nowata, Ochelata, Salina, Sallisaw, Stilwell and Vinita; a $522,000 total increase for the immersion school; and a continued emphasis on children, family and elder services.

    WASHINGTON COUNTY, Oklahoma - Authorities have arrested a man in the death of a woman near Ochelata. Washington County Sheriff's Office said they arrested John Jeffery Thomas for first-degree murder and a protective order violation in the death of Michele E. Mayes.  Mayes had recently broken up with Thomas and filed a protective order against him for domestic abuse, according to family members.  On September 4, investigators say Thomas shot and killed her in the front yard of the Prairie View Trailer Park on West 2900 Road.

    The Cherokee Nation says it has been awarded a $411,000 grant that they will use to prevent traffic crashes and improve traffic flow on Highway 75 east of Ochelata. They say a "J-Turn" will be built at the intersection of 75 and Washington County's 2900 Road, which has been the scene of several serious crashes.

    The Cherokee Nation was recently awarded a $411,000 grant that will be used to prevent traffic collisions and improve the flow of traffic on U.S. Highway 75 near the Cooweescoowee Health Center in Ochelata. The grant is from Tribal Transportation Safety Funds, which are set aside by the federal government each year to address transportation safety issues in Indian Country.

    Officials say firefighters from Ramona, Vera, Ochelata, Oglesby, Avant, Bartlesville, Dewey, Copan, Nelogoney and Washington County are exhausted but continuing efforts to stop the fire. Washington County Emergency Management Director Kary Cox says firefighters are running low on supplies and they are seeking donations of Gatorade as well as cash to pay for fuel and equipment repairs.
