    Parishioners at St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Martinez celebrated the 145th anniversary of the founding of the church with a huge procession around the downtown, Mass and a party on April 28. A procession that at one point stretched for four blocks began at Susana Park, about a block from the church, and moved six blocks to Main Street, turned and returned to the church via Castro Street. Participants carried banners from their organizations, sang and stopped on Main Street as Rev.

Barber, SJ, said in announcing the appointment on May 9. Pierre-Antoine, who has served as a Catholic educator in the East Bay Area for most of his career, began work in his new role May 14. The April 21 gala at Oakland's Greek Orthodox Cathedral will be the first opportunity for many of the supporters to meet Filomena Spero, who became director on March 26. Spero, born and raised "in a big Italian-American family" in Chicago, brings more than 20 years of development experience to her new post.

    Christianity had a memorable moment in the public square on Good Friday, as the plaza in front of Oakland City Hall was the setting for "What's So Good About Good Friday?" The Good Friday service, featuring what the moderator called "sermonettes" on the Seven Last Words of Jesus spoken by the cross presented by seven church leaders from around the city, drew a crowd that grew past 150, filling the amphitheater on the plaza. The people came prepared: Bibles, bottled water, camp chairs and wide-brimmed hats helped protect them on one of the year's warmest days, with temperatures hitting 75 degrees as the planned three-hour service began at noon.
