    Oak Creek/Franklin - Two Democratic candidates will vie for the chance to unseat Jessie Rodriguez , who is the current State Assembly representative from the 21st District, during the primary election Tuesday, August 9. John Redmond, 63, of Oak Creek and Frank Disco Gratke, 62, of South Milwaukee will both be on the ballot in August. Gratke has lived in the 21st District for 34 years, and is a retired researcher, but says he is a "full-time citizen advocate."

A woman was cited for shoplifting and obstructing police after she shoplifted a cart filled with merchandise at Goodwill Industries, 8201 S. Howell Ave., refused to return it when confronted by employees, and then gave police false identification and information when they contacted her via telephone at about 8:30 p.m. July 23. A man was cited for shoplifting two electronic-fence dog collars, valued at $260, by hiding them inside a dog bed he purchased at Menards, 6800 S. 27th St., at about 3:25 p.m. July 25. A man was taken into custody for domestic violence/disorderly conduct and child abuse after he broke a table, allegedly threatened to kill his mother and allegedly choked his 14-year-old sister in the 8000 block of South Wildwood Drive at about 9:30 p.m. July 20.     This year, the event will take place at the American Legion Post 434, 9327 S. Shepard Avenue, instead of the High School Freshman Campus due to construction on the building. The event will last from 6 to 9 p.m. According to the official National Night Out website , the event is "an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live."

    About $400 worth of tools and a toolbox were stolen from a locked garage at Victoria Motel, 10131 S. Chicago Road, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. July 13. There were no signs of forced entry. A $2,300 65-inch Sony TV and a $400 Sony soundbar and subwoofer were stolen from a residence in the 6600 block of South 13th Street between 8:20 p.m. July 17 and 4:30 a.m. July 18. The home may have been entered through a window on the front door.

A wallet containing a driver's license and credit cards was stolen out of an unlocked vehicle in the 2100 block of West Cedar Street between 9 p.m. July 5 and 7 a.m. July 6. A $40 pair of Nike sandals was stolen out of an unlocked vehicle in the 1700 block of West Drexel Avenue between 11 p.m. July 6 and 6 a.m. July 7. A purse containing a $150 Michael Kors wallet, $43 and a debit card was reported stolen out of a locked vehicle parked in the employee lot at Crothall Laundry Services, 9905 S. 13th St., at 1:45 p.m. July 7.     The city posted two road construction updates to their Facebook page on July 8. One includes water main work on S. 15th Avenue and the other is correction of a storm sewer pipe at the intersection of Oakwood Road and Howell Avenue. For the storm sewer pipe work, traffic in the westbound lane at the intersection will be diverted for approximately a week, according to the post.

    Plans for a potential 900-unit self-storage facility at the corner of Howell Avenue and College Avenue have been stored away until the July 12 plan commission meeting. The vacant lot that encompasses 6304 and 6340 S. Howell Ave. and 137, 147 and 209 E. College Ave. is being considered for a facility by Kelly Gallacher, owner of Self Storage Ventures LLC. The plans arrived not long before the plan commission meeting June 28, which resulted in a unanimous tabling of the proposal per staff recommendation until the next meeting in mid July.
