    NORTHBRIDGE – The School Building Committee submitted to state authorities last week its preferred plan for a new building that would combine students in pre-kindergarten through Grade 5 on the grounds of the W. Edward Balmer Elementary School, Building Committee Chairman Joseph Strazzulla told selectmen Monday. The proposal for a property tax debt exclusion to pay for the project will likely be on the fall town meeting warrant and November election ballot.

Articles on the May 1 spring annual town meeting warrant, amending zoning and general bylaws to prohibit recreational marijuana establishments, would also have to be approved for the ban to go into effect.

    NORTHBRIDGE – Selectmen opted Monday to put on their Dec. 4 agenda action on whether to propose bylaws to prohibit or restrict recreational marijuana establishments. Town Planner R. Gary Bechtholdt II presented selectmen with a timeline by which action would need to be taken on any of the local options allowed under the state law that legalized the sale of marijuana for non-medical purposes.

    Juniors at Northbridge High School had a chance to interact one-on-one with around 40 area veterans Thursday, and many said that what they learned will stick with them for life.  For 13 years, the school has hosted veterans after a Veterans Day ceremony and presentations in the auditorium. Students then move to the cafeteria upstairs to interview the veterans about their military experiences and use the material to make videos about them.

    UXBRIDGE – Town meeting voters opted Tuesday to raise $400,000 to pay for road maintenance this fiscal year, which will add 25 cents on the existing tax rate, or $76.80 per year on a typical $300,000 home. The $400,000 is within the excess levy capacity that resulted from National Grid improvements in town two years ago, so the increase is within the Proposition 2½ limits.

    NORTHBRIDGE – At the fall annual town meeting, voters agreed to buy out National Grid streetlights and convert them to LED fixtures, install underground utility lines and replace overhead poles, clear the way for an indoor motocross facility on Main Street, and repair plaster, reinforce drop ceilings and repair or replace the sound system, carpet and seating at the middle school. Selectman Chair James J. Athanas made the motion for the town to appropriate $400,000, by raising $200,000 and borrowing $200,000, to purchase existing streetlights from National Grid and convert the streetlights to energy-efficient and long-lasting LED fixtures.
