According to a Nassau County police spokeswoman, a report of a suspicious backpack or duffel bag in a trashcan at the station came in early in the evening, and the bomb squad responded at 7:53 p.m. According to North Merrick resident and member of the Nassau County Firemen's Association, John Scalesi, trains were stopped at the Merrick station for two hours.

According to police, a suspect described as 5-foot, 8 inches tall, of average build, wearing a dark hat, dark jacket, blue jeans and a gray scarf and gloves, entered the store around 7 p.m., brandishing a large kitchen knife.
