    The Homer Audubon Christmas Bird Count is Saturday, Dec. 20. Meet at Islands and Ocean Visitor Center at 8:30 a.m. to form teams and get assigned. Coffee, tea and some breakfast breads will be available, and counters will return at 4:30 p.m. to tabulate results and enjoy a potluck meal.

Between the Coast Guard Hickory's generous 3,160 pound donation of cans and dry goods, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, the Glacierview Baptist Youth Group, several churches and many generous individuals, we are able to provide holiday boxes for many people this season.

    The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge will open for Christmas tree cutting through Christmas Day, Thursday, Dec. 25. Trees are free for personal use, with a limit of one per household. Trees may be taken anywhere on the Refuge with hand tools, except within 150 feet of a road, lake, stream, trail, campground, or picnic area.
