    With nine of their players still playing football last week, the Newberry High School varsity boys basketball team moved some of their jayvee players up to field a team in the meantime. Trailing by six points after both of the first two quarters, Newberry saw Chapin go on a 22-six third quarter run as they would go on to the 71-44 victory.

    O.B. Mayer was a Newberry physician, a professor at Newberry College, a historian and the author of folk tales told of the customs and culture of the Dutch Fork area. One story, printed in the Newberry Herald in 1891, was called "Aberhot Koselhantz, The Wizard Gunsmith" and had its origins in his childhood.

    Ninety Six National Historic Site will light the way to the past during the Autumn Candlelight Tour on Oct. 22. Reenactors will present scenes from the earliest days of Ninety Six until the American Revolution along the one-mile interpretive trail lit by the soft glow of hundreds of luminaries and lanterns. Tours begin at 6:50 p.m. and depart every 10 minutes with the last tour at 8:20 p.m. The tours last just over an hour and are led by a guide with a period-style lantern.

After two plays had negative yardage, the Wildcats picked up zero yards before looking at a fourth-and-goal from the five.

    Ninety Six National Historic Site and the Carolina Skygazers Astronomy club invite the public to a free, family friendly Find Your Park After Dark - Star Gazing Program from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. July 9 at the Star Fort Pond off Kinard Road. The Carolina Skygazers will have various sized telescopes available to view the celestial bodies.

    Matthew Dorn Womack of the Newberry County Sheriff's Office has been awarded the 2015 Larry Bragg Deputy of the Year award. The award is named in recognition of Deputy Lawrence Bragg III, who died in the line of duty in June 1989.
