    Waterford - A town resident who has made his name recruiting executives for technology firms is proposing a different kind of venture: a gourmet barbeque smokehouse that his lawyer says would turn the mostly deserted Mago Point neighborhood into a “destination.” Paul Daversa, who grew up in East Lyme and owns a house in Waterford, bought the former site of seafood restaurant Unk's By the Bay in 2014. Unk's, formerly a Mago Point landmark, opened as a clam shack in the 1930s.

    East Lyme - First Selectman Mark Nickerson presented a list of proposed budget reductions Wednesday to the Board of Finance, following the finance board's $275,000 cut to the selectmen's proposed 2016-17 town government budget . Position hours, overtime, heating oil and storm materials are among the cuts to the 2016-17 selectmen's budget.  Under Nickerson's proposal, the town's transfer station would be closed for one day during the week. Nickerson said this would not affect garbage or recycling pick-up.

    East Lyme - The state Department of Transportation has announced that the first stage of construction for the replacement of the Route 1 bridge over the Niantic River will begin Friday. The project consists of replacing the entire bridge, between East Lyme and Waterford, and includes widening Route 1 to accommodate a left hand turning lane onto Oil Mill Road, according to a news release.

    East Lyme - The Board of Education voted 8 to 2 Monday to endorse a proposal that would fully renovate the Lillie B. Haynes School, postpone rebuilding Flanders Elementary School but refurbish it in the interim, and close Niantic Center School. Before endorsing the new proposal, the board rescinded a vote taken last November that approved an earlier proposal, with an estimated $58 million cost to the town following state reimbursement, to simultaneously rebuild Flanders Elementary School and fully renovate Niantic Center, while closing Lillie B. Haynes and returning the building to the town.
