Since they began participating in the drug take-back events, which are orchestrated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, East Lyme officials have collected more than 700 pounds of unwanted medications, according to a news release.

Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, according to a news release.

    State police arrested an East Lyme man earlier this month after he crashed the car he was driving during a high-speed chase and eluded capture for more than a week, according to police. Robert Broga Jr., 24, of 44 Cubles Drive, Niantic, was charged April 12 on a warrant in Westbrook with second-degree failure to appear in court, driving with a suspended license, reckless driving, disobeying the signal of an officer, engaging police in pursuit, failure to drive right, using a vehicle without its owner's permission, third-degree larceny and second-degree criminal trover.

Position hours, overtime, heating oil and storm materials are among the cuts to the 2016-17 selectmen's budget.  Under Nickerson's proposal, the town's transfer station would be closed for one day during the week. Nickerson said this would not affect garbage or recycling pick-up.

    East Lyme - The state Department of Transportation has announced that the first stage of construction for the replacement of the Route 1 bridge over the Niantic River will begin Friday. The project consists of replacing the entire bridge, between East Lyme and Waterford, and includes widening Route 1 to accommodate a left hand turning lane onto Oil Mill Road, according to a news release.
