    Rhode Island Republicans are criticizing General Assembly-approved state grants in light of former Economic Development Corporation Director Keith Stoke's firm receiving money through the Newport Chamber of Commerce - Stokes' employer prior to his ill-fated term with the EDC. On Monday, the Providence Journal reported that $225,000 of state grants had been awarded to the Newport Chamber in recent years, who also spent nearly half that amount with the politically connected lobbying firm, The Mayforth Group, where Stokes has been employed following being ousted from from the EDC in 2012 .

    As GoLocalProv first reported, Volvo Ocean Race is returning to Newport and now the dates are set for the Volvo Ocean Race Newport Stopover which will take place May 8-20, 2018. The boards are expected to arrive in Newport between May 8 and 10, with the in-port racing taking place from May 17-19 and the leg departure to Wales on May 20. This comes after the Newport stopover in 2015 was the race's only North American stop and was an success.
