Authorities estimate that the 78-foot long dead blue whale weighing over 100 pounds was dead for about two weeks before it washed up onto the sandy beach.

    The skeleton of a 78-foot blue whale that washed ashore Monday will be preserved and put on display in Newport. But first, students from the OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center and other volunteers have to strip the 4-inch thick blubber from the carcass of the whale, said Calum Stevenson, an ocean shore specialist with Oregon Parks and Recreation.

    A series of three earthquakes have rumbled off the Oregon coast, but all appeared too distant to cause any problems on land. The U.S. Geological Survey says the largest was a magnitude-5.8 quake that struck shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday and was centered in the Pacific nearly 300 miles west of Newport.
