    A 15-year-old boy has been charged in the shooting of an 18-year-old who was found Sunday afternoon in the 700 block of 31st St. Officers were called about the shooting victim shortly after 2:30 p.m. He was taken to a hospital and his injuries were not considered life- threatening, according to a Newport News police news release. The 15-year-old was charged with maiming, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a juvenile, police wrote in a release this morning.

Miguel Jamal Nichols of the 1500 block of Ivy Ave. was charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

    Six adults and two juveniles were displaced from their homes Sunday night when a fire destroyed two apartments, the fire department said in a release. Crews were called at 9:23 p.m. to a fire at the Waypoint apartments in the 800 block of Lucas Creek Road and arrived to find smoke showing from a two-story building, the department said.

    Shortly before 10:15 a.m., firefighters were called to the 300 block of Civil Court in the Courthouse Green Apartments and found smoke coming from an apartment, according to a news release. A deputy from the Newport News Sheriff's Office had already helped a woman get out of the apartment and took care of her until firefighters arrived.
