    The North Carolina/Tennessee border and the surrounding areas have been subject to many minor earthquakes over the last month, including five recorded quakes happening in the last week, according to the United States Geological Survey. Two earthquakes were recorded on July 21, one near Newland and another near Walhalla, S. C., both measuring at 1.9 on the Richter scale.

    On the evening of July 16, a man jumped from the top of the falls into the water and never resurfaced. Avery County Sheriff Kevin Frye identified the victim on the morning of July 19 as 39-year-old Jacques Downing of Newland.

    A Newland man is in custody in McDowell County following the shooting of two victims in Marion on the morning of March 17. William Isaac Erwin, 27, of 2931 Big Plumtree Creek Road in Newland, was charged on March 18 with murder, first-degree burglary and attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon. According to a news release from the Marion Police Department, officers responded to 242 Kathy St. at approximately 4:06 a.m. on March 17 to investigate a shooting.

    On March 22, Oscar Martin Cook III, 32, pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree murder and one count of second-degree murder in the deaths of Ronald Buchanan and Brandy Rose, according to the office of District Attorney Seth Banks. Buchanan and Rose were found unresponsive at a residence on Summer Haven Street in Newland on Dec. 29, 2013.
