    It took Newberry High School head football coach Phil Strickland 29 years to accumulate 299 victories in his coaching career and 18 hours to win his 300th over the weekend in Columbia. Just 75 seconds into the Bulldogs' game with Keenan on Friday at Memorial Stadium, a one-hour lightning storm delayed the game then game officials postponed the game until 11 a.m. Saturday.

    A new early morning outdoor fitness group call F3, aimed at the men of Newberry County, will hold its first workout on Aug. 20. The three components of F3 are fitness, fellowship and faith, member Bryan Thomas said, adding that those three components can also act as the magnet, glue and dynamite. "Fitness is the magnet that brings everyone out first thing in the morning.

    Identity theft tops the list of consumer complaints reported to the Federal Trade Commission and other law enforcement agencies every year, with victims falling prey to low-tech methods of Dumpster-diving and high-tech methods of phishing emails. Newberry Electric Cooperative, in an effort to help Newberry County residents fight the low-tech crimes, is holding a Shred Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 25. They are partnering with Shred360 and Smith Cleaning, a cleaning and landscape company, to hold the event, which will also include a Back to School Supply Drive.

    The Eels swim team from the Newberry YMCA has extended its Carolina YMCA Summer Swim League championship streak to 13 years, giving coach Khrista Webb an accomplishment she can take with her as she departs for Salem, Mo. But for Webb and the rest of the Eels, a funny thing happened on the way to the awards ceremony: They were told they came in second to Greenwood's first place showing when the championship meet was held July 16 and July 17 in Georgetown.
