    Tracie Killar , the director of South End Children's CafA , alongside volunteers from the State University of New York at Albany students, cleaned and painted the cafA Saturday, Oct. 3. - In the food desert that is Albany's South End, Nov. 2 will see the opening of a children's soup kitchen with after-school tutoring and educational programs, thanks in part to Traci Killar of Slingerlands and other Bethlehem residents. Because there are no grocery stores, farmers markets or other sources of fresh fruits and vegetables within a mile of the area, the south end is considered a food desert, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture .

    Since 1965 the Town of New Scotland has been dependent on Bethlehem for parts of its water supply, and since that time the rate has been set at a maximum of twice the rate paid by Bethlehem residents. According to Dolin, the rate has been an ear-constant source of resident complaints, and the town has attempted to get out of this contract numerous times.

However before the application could go to the town, the Albany County Board of Appeals said the applicant had not met use variance criteria required from the town.
