    A 45-year-old Slingerlands man was in the Albany County Jail on Thursday after being charged with beating and sexually assaulting a woman. Gary H. Graffunder was accused of striking and choking the unidentified woman at a New Scotland residence Tuesday after she refused his sexual advances, and then sexually assaulting her, according to the Albany County Sheriff's Department.

Ava Doyle, an Emma Willard senior who lives in Slingerlands, created the afterschool program at Hope 7 Community Center on Troy's Pawling Avenue, where she and other classmates lead younger students in weekly sessions that include work on individual pieces and instruction on scales, pitch training and other skills.
