    As the sun set out over the Quabbin Reservoir Wednesday, swallows made rapid circles over the boat launch area at Gate 31, two deer wandered out of the woods to feed near the water's edge and a pair of Baltimore orioles flew across the parking lot from one sheltered perch to another. Wildlife is often not far away at the fishing gate off of Route 122, near where Athol, Orange, Petersham and New Salem come together, but a rare treat came as darkness fell and a bird began repetitively calling out its name, "Whip-poor-will! Whip-poor-will!" The calling went on for more than a minute before the bird quieted down, flew off to find another place to land and then started in again.
