    Officers responding to a 911 call reporting a break-in arrested three men who they said were in the process of trying to break into a safe behind a building in Glen Cove on Wednesday. Glen Cove police and Nassau County police said an investigation determined the safe, as well as items recovered during the arrests, were from a prior burglary - one that took place at about 6 p.m. Monday on Cornwells Road in Sands Point.

    A raccoon trapped in Nassau County has rabies, the first confirmed case on Long Island since 2007, authorities said Thursday in issuing a public health alert. The raccoon was collected this week by a licensed wildlife trapper in a residential area of Hicksville and its head was sent to the state health department laboratory for testing, said county health spokeswoman Mary Ellen Laurain.
