    The person elected to fill the seat left open by Jim Tracy 's departure from the state Senate won't take office until mid-March, about halfway through the Legislature's 2018 session, but an interim senator still could be appointed by the Bedford County Commission. A special election is being held in early 2018 to replace Tracy, a Bedford County Republican who left to fill an appointment in the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
