    As the University Interscholastic League Academic State Championships came to a close this week with speech events Monday and Tuesday at the University of Texas in Austin, several Panhandle students earned medals: Muleshoe's Giovanni Ceja won a gold medal in Class 3A poetry, and Wyat Parker won gold in prose interpretation. Dylan Ringo of San-Ford Fritch took home the bronze medal in class 2A poetry.

    Xcel Energy is pursuing $65 million in power grid upgrades in Bailey and Lamb counties aimed at relieving overloaded lines and accommodating future economic expansion in the region. Xcel announced on Monday that it has filed its upgrade plan with the Public Utility Commission of Texas for consideration in the near future in hopes of having new infrastructure in service within four years.

    A Mexican citizen now faces charges of capital murder and aggravated kidnapping in connection with a Muleshoe woman's death and a separate assault on an officer that led to a multi-county chase. Lucio Camacho, 47, was arrested early Jan. 5 in Lubbock when his vehicle crashed at a law enforcement road block hours after investigators believe he fatally stabbed 44-year-old Petra Granados De Flores, leaving her residence in Muleshoe with the woman as well as her 3-year-old child.

    One woman is dead and a man is in custody following a stabbing, kidnapping and multi-county chase thought to have started early Friday in Muleshoe. Investigators think the situation began in Muleshoe, went into Garza County and ended in Lubbock County, where 46-year-old Lucio Gollo Camacho was arrested following a chase that ended with a crash at a law enforcement road block.
