    The Justice Department announced today that Randel Branscum, 56, former chief sheriff's deputy and jail administrator in Stone County, had been sentenced to a year and a day in federal prison for arranging an assault on an inmate by other prisoners March 2 in the Mountain View jail. A news release said Branscum admitted that: ... while acting under his authority as jail administrator, he approached a group of inmates, who were detained together in cell 33 and told them to "handle" the victim. 3 comments

    Artist Thom Hall , architect Reese Rowland, writer and folk historian Freda Cruse Hardison and graphic artist Max Elbo are the winners of 2017 Governor's Arts Awards , sponsored by the Arkansas Arts Council. Hall, the enamel and figurative artist who was the registrar for the Arkansas Arts Center for 40 years before retiring, is the winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award.

    While Madison and Jared's love might be forever and always, The U.S. Forest Service is looking for volunteers to assist in an Oct. 15 effort to make sure the vandals' spray can devotion no longer mars one of the state's classic swimming holes. The limestone bluffs above Gunner Pool , along scenic North Sylamore Creek near Mountain View, have been defaced by graffiti , some of which is seen in the photo above.

The chest-thumping boasts that dropping turkeys from an airplane would be a feature of the Yellville Turkey Trot again this year has energized animal lovers worldwide and they continue a campaign to shame an end to it.
