    Portland and Upper Mount Bethel Township officials have agreed to ask the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development for help to conduct a study regarding a potential joint police force. Upper Mount Bethel disbanded its own police department in 1996 and Portland has a police department with five part-time officers, who provide about 80 to 90 hours of coverage per week for the borough.

    This boxer that was chained in a basement in Pen Argyl was recently rescued by the Slate Belt Animal Control Officer Christine Mammi.( A group of Slate Belt residents are discussing the possibility of opening a new animal shelter to help address a lingering problem with stray dogs and cats. The Slate Belt Council of Governments recently formed the Slate Belt Animal Advocacy Group, which wants to establish the animal shelter, expand the role of the local animal control officer and provide other services needed for the local pet population.
