    Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers rescued an 11-year-old Ronkonkoma boy and his father Sunday evening, after both were dragged out by a riptide off Cupsogue Beach in Westhampton Beach. Police said the boy, Justyn Espineira, was swimming at Cupsogue Beach at about 6 p.m., but was unable to swim back to shore because of a strong riptide.

    Authorities say the pilot of a single engine airplane escaped serious injury when he crash landed in the waters off Westerly to avoid people on the beach. Rhode Island State Police say 62-year-old Alexander Piekarski of East Moriches, New York, was flying alone from New York's Long Island to Taunton, Massachusetts, when his four-seat Beech Craft Bonanza began losing power.
