    People who don't want commercial indoor cultivation, manufacturing, testing and delivery of marijuana products in Montebello on Wednesday filed the paperwork for an initiative that would ban all those uses as well as retail dispensaries, which never were allowed in the city. The backers of the would-be measure have six months to collect about 3,000 signatures once City Attorney Arnold Alvarez Glasman has prepared a title and summary of their measure.

Jerry Brown. Assembly Bill 2339, authored by Assemblyman Mike Gipson, D-Gardena, was approved by the state Assembly and Senate on lopsided bipartisan votes last month.

    The West Nile virus continues to be detected in mosquitoes in the San Fernando Valley, Montebello and La Mirada, with 19 positive samples collected since early July, the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District reported Monday. The positive samples were collected in Burbank, Encino, La Mirada, Montebello, Northridge, Panorama City, Porter Ranch, Sherman Oaks, Sun Valley and Van Nuys in the period between July 3 and Aug. 16. West Nile virus is transmitted to people and animals through the bite of an infected mosquito and is a leading cause of severe infections of the nervous system among adults over 50 in Los Angeles County.

    The California Supreme Court refused Wednesday to review the case of a man described by authorities as a founding member of a Montebello-based gang's "kill squad, " who is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for the execution-style killings of two rival gang members. A jury in downtown Los Angeles found Jimmy Valenzuela, now 32, guilty in September 2016 of first-degree murder for the slayings of 22-year-old Joe Anthony Alvarado, who was shot to death in his car on Dec. 22, 2007, and Jimmy Jimenez, 29, who was fatally shot on July 24, 2010.

Former Superintendent Susanna Contreras Smith, who was awarded $2.7 million, and former chief financial and operations officer Cleve Pell, who was given $567,665, contended they were whistleblowers who lost their jobs for coming forward about alleged misconduct by the then-Board of Education and Chief Business Officer Ruben J. Rojas.
