    The Sonoma County Department of Health Services reopened Monte Rio Beach today after water tests Tuesday revealed diminished levels of E. coli and total coliform bacteria. The Russian River beach was closed Thursday after total coliform and E.coli levels in a water sample exceeded state guidelines and Department of Health Services protocol.

On Thursday, July 6 - following some of the largest crowds ever recorded over the extended Independence Day weekend - the Environmental Health & Safety division of Sonoma County's Department of Health Services issued a press release saying that it had ordered staff to post "warning-closure signs" at Monte Rio advising the public against "swimming, wading or water contact."

    Sticks, knives and an assortment of beer cans and bottles were among the weapons used in a gang brawl along the Russian River this weekend, where five men were hospitalized and two teenagers were arrested, authorities said. Sonoma County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to Monte Rio Beach at 6:40 p.m. Saturday because a group of people were reportedly fighting and throwing beer cans, the sheriff's office said in a statement.

    A Monte Rio man is being held in Sonoma County Jail on $50,000 bail after an incident on Harley and Highway 12 on April 14. Deputies were called at 2:50 p.m. when a panhandler reportedly demanded money and goods from a passerby, and reportedly threatened the would-be victim. The panhandler, Gene Harris, 37, denied that he was being aggressive, but deputies arrested him on charges of attempted robbery and a probation violation.
