Michael Pershall, the off-duty Modesto Police Officer killed Tuesday evening by a suspected drunk driver near Savage Middle School in Modesto, spent four years as a Tuolumne County Sheriff's Deputy until 2012. Tuolumne County Sheriff Jim Mele, who hired Pershall in 2008, remembered him not only as a capable law enforcement officer, but also as a friend.
