    A 22-year-old Mineola man was sentenced to five years probation after a Wood County jury convicted him of tampering with physical evidence, a third-degree felony. Thomas W. Liles Jr. was charged with the offense of concealing drug paraphernalia by throwing it in a dumpster at a Quitman apartment complex after the start of an investigation into the deaths of two children there, according to a news release from the Wood County District Attorney's Office.

Investigators secured arrest warrants for the following suspects: Jaleen Norton, 17, of Hawkins; Gakerrion Miller, 18, of Tyler; Cody Jones, 19, of Hawkins; Richard Levi Hammonds, 17, of Hawkins; and Krispen Wooten, 18, of Hawkins.

    The 2017 Accountability Ratings, released on Tuesday, show that of the more than 75 public school campuses in the Smith County area, only Tyler ISD's T.J. Austin Elementary School, Dogan Middle School and Winona ISD's Winona Elementary School were rated "Improvement Required."
