    A 42-year-old city man is banned from having any animals while on probation after Joseph Christakos admitted he let his 4-year-old dog suffer for weeks from a treatable uterine infection that caused her to be euthanized. In Lowell District Court on Monday, Joseph E. Christakos of Lowell was sentenced to six months in jail, suspended for 18 months while he is on probation after pleading guilty to one count of animal cruelty by a custodian.

    The U.S. Attorney's Office in Concord said Wednesday that 34-year-old Luis Martin Carvajal Gonzalez also pleaded guilty to a charge of possessing fentanyl with intent to distribute. He is scheduled to be sentenced on April 11. Court documents say Gonzalez, of Methuen, Massachusetts, sold heroin and fentanyl to an undercover police officer on multiple occasions at Salem businesses in December 2015.
