    Like several other growing communities in California in the 1880s, the new town of Redlands attracted numerous Chinese immigrants who had originally crossed the Pacific to work on the Southern Pacific Railroad. Seeking employment as gardeners, domestic servants, laundrymen and laborers, Chinese men began to appear in Redlands area following the completion of the San Timoteo Canyon and San Gorgonio Pass section of the railroad in 1876-77.
