The California Public Utilities Commission stated in a resolution last week the project will benefit ongoing fiber projects by the Karuk and Yurok tribes in underserved areas like Weitchpec and Orleans, which are already at risk of service interruptions from fires and severe winter weather.

County Public Works Director Tom Mattson - who oversees the county's Aviation Division - said the county was required by the federal agency to turn in amendments to its Aviation Security Program by June 2016, but did so six months later.

    On July 17, 2018, at about 10:30 a.m., a Humboldt County Sheriff's deputy on patrol in the area of Highway 101 and Giuntoli Lane observed a vehicle with expired registration and a non-functioning brake light traveling north on Highway 101. When the deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, the driver, later identified as 41-year-old Leon Rockwell Peel of McKinleyville, failed to pull over, leading the deputy on an approximately one-mile pursuit through McKinleyville.
