Are you making any New Year's resolutions this year? New Year's resolutions are so common that even the US Government has a web page listing the most popular resolutions. The idea of celebrating New Year's goes back thousands of years. The name for the month of January is taken from the Roman god Janus, the god of beginnings and endings. Janus is most often depicted as having two faces, one looking forward and one looking backward. He was frequently used to symbolize change and transitions such as the progression of past to future and of one condition to another. So on the first day of January we look back at the past year and forward to the new year. This reflection along with our resolutions help us make strong our hopes and dreams for the new year. Once we have set our resolutions the hard part of sticking to them begins. Here are a few tips which may help us attain our goals. * Don't avoid setting goals due to past failure. * Be realistic. Set goals which are attainable. * Avoid making too many resolutions. * Set intermediate goals at 3, 6, and 9 months. * Reward yourself as goals are met. * Use the buddy system and support from friends. * Avoid people and places that could cause set-backs. * Don't let one set-back cause you to give up. And lastly, don't forget to acknowledge even partial success of your goals. If you are just one step closer to your goal, then you are better off than before you began.
