    MARSHALLTOWN Orpheum Theater Center Director Bob Untiedt has been on the job for just a handful of months, but in that time he's studied the Orpheum's history, expanded the Advisory Committee, hosted a planning event that involved nearly 80 stakeholders, and offered a variety of events designed to appeal to diverse audiences. He told the IVCCD Board of Directors this month that the staff is excited and optimistic about the future of the Orpheum, with plans to capitalize and build on the community interest and support that's currently in place.

    It's no secret the editorial view of The News-Herald has been dim ever since Iowa Valley Community College District took over the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Marshalltown. Dumping between some $3-4 million in Iowa Valley money funded through a bond issue into renovations of the theatre was simply not acceptable then, nor is the continuing operation without an apparent educational focus now.

    Tama Police Chief Jacob Bina told city council members meeting on Monday night, Aug. 15, he had served notice to have property at the Lincoln Bridge Motel cleaned up by Aug 31. Included are a pair of campers, pallets a skid loader and riding lawn mowers "that are just sitting around" according to Bina. The council has expressed concern over recent years about the east gateway to Tama running from an abandoned truck stop to the 5th Street exit off Business 30. A fleet of used vehicles said to "not move" with the owner identifed as Larry Peterson, Marshalltown, has been brought to the attention of the Iowa Department of Transportation which handles used car lots.

    Both Jesse Brown, a paramedic, and Duane Backen, currently director of the Tama Ambulance Service and an advanced EMT, were approved for a part-time position to assist Don Weitzell, the service's full-time paramedic and administrator. The Tama City Council voted to approve the hirings 4-0 Monday night, July 18. Weitzell had sought help to aid with paperwork associated with the service which builds up if he is absent, the need to fill call shifts and related ambulance duties.
