Multnomah, Marion and Lane Counties got the green light Friday to begin shipping their stockpiles of untested sexual assault kits to a private lab in Utah, which is expected to analyze about 3,000 of Oregon's 5,600 unprocessed kits. The Multnomah County board of commissioners on Thursday approved a contract with Sorenson Forensics LLC, based in Salt Lake City, to conduct the tests. Comment?

As reported in the Jan. 7 Tribune, the Metro Council is considering sending 'one-fifth of the tricounty area's trash, about 200,000 tons a year,' to the Covanta Marion waste-to-energy incinerator in Brooks as one of its combination of three options for dealing with the region's waste when current contracts expire in 2019. Metro's proposal flies in the face of widespread and growing consensus by the citizens it represents that we urgently need to move from being a high-carbon society based upon dirty fossil fuels and high levels of extraction, waste, pollution and global warming gases ... to a low-carbon society based upon clean forms of energy, equity, health and low levels of waste, pollution and global warming emissions. The North Marion football team picked up one of its most lopsided victories in program history, forcing five turnovers while never having to punt the ball in a 66-6 route over the visiting Yamhill-Carlton Tigers Friday night. It was the league opener for both members of the Oregon West Conference, and the Tigers had little answer for a swarming Husky defense and powerful running run game that racked up 324 yards on the ground en route to 445 yards of total offense for North Marion.
