    The Central Marin Police Authority, Corte Madera and Larkspur fire departments, Corte Madera Chamber of Commerce and Corte Madera Lion's Club will accept gifts for their 14th annual holiday gift collection drive until Dec. 19. Gifts for children and teens can be dropped off at any of the following locations: Central Marin Police Authority, 250 Doherty Drive in Larkspur and 525 San Anselmo Ave. in San Anselmo; Corte Madera Fire Department, 342 Tamalpais Drive; and Larkspur Fire Department, 15 Barry Way. There also will be a collection site at The Corte Madera Village shopping center in the center court from noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 20 and 21. All items will be distributed to local youth and children served by Marin Health and Human Services.

    Tuesday's downpour, which dumped an inch of rain on many Marin neighborhoods in six hours before easing somewhat, brought commute traffic on Highway 101 to a crawl in a backup aggravated by a rash of accidents.     An early-morning deluge washed the North Bay on Tuesday, bringing commute traffic on Highway 101 to a crawl and spurring a spate of accidents including an incident with a car on the Golden Gate Bridge sidewalk. Water pooled in a number of low-lying areas, including the freeway through Corte Madera, as well as northbound at Interstate 580, and apparently was a factor in a spate of accidents.

    Propelled by ongoing concerns about the potential for additional housing in the Tamal Vista Boulevard neighborhood, Corte Madera placed an almost yearlong moratorium on development in the area. Town Council members voted unanimously Tuesday night without discussion to extend a 45-day urgency ordinance adopted Oct. 7 that places a temporary moratorium on any new development in the seven-parcel area bounded by Highway 101, Madera Boulevard, Wornum Drive and Tamal Vista Boulevard.
