The death of the 8-month-old lion again illustrated the hazards faced by cougars living among urban sprawl and networks of roads that are barriers to territorial roaming and genetic diversity among the puma populations.

    A Marine was hit and killed on a Southern California freeway when he stopped to help a suspected drunk driver who had been in a crash, officials said. NBC Los Angeles reported that Enrico Antonio Rojo, 29, of Ontario, was driving his family to the airport about 1:30 a.m. Monday when he stopped on Interstate 10 near Mountain View Avenue to help a woman whose vehicle had crashed with a tractor-trailer and flipped onto its roof, according to the Redlands Fire Department.

    While the Blue Cut Fire that has been ravaging thousands of acres near Los Angeles is 83 percent contained, other wildfires are burning up and down the state, including one threatening the historic Hearst Castle, authorities said. The 24,000-acre Chimney Fire in San Luis Obispo County is burning toward the Hearst estate, a group of mansions on 127 acres, but authorities are hopeful that bulldozed fire lines will protect the former home of newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst, which operates as a museum.
