    WHITTIER – A large, more than 60-year-old ficus tree on College Avenue, which city officials had planned to remove because its roots would block development of a small shopping center, will be allowed to stay. The decision came after it was discovered the tree's roots went toward the street, instead of the planned Whittier Crossroads shopping center on the former Saturn auto dealership, officials said.
