    As the tournament's number three seed and defending 2013 champion, it wasn't unexpected that the Homestead Mustangs advanced to the Central Coast Section Division I girls volleyball semi-finals last week by beating the sixth-seeded Palo Alto Vikings. What was unexpected, however, was the team the Mustangs will face Wednesday night for the right to play for the 2014 Section championship.

    It seems that Woodward Park in Fresno is the site of the CIF State Cross Country Championships each fall, and runners will be back on that 3.1-mile course on Nov. 29 to compete in the year's biggest high school meet. And in that field will be a number of area teams and individuals who placed high enough at the Central Coast Section finals held last Saturday at Toro Park in Salinas to win state berths.

No matter how many times Los Altos got ahead of Mitty or the size of the leads the Eagles built -- which were never very large -- the Monarchs always managed to claw their way back and take control.

Both teams advanced Wednesday night to the title match, with second-seeded Los Altos holding off Presentation in four tight sets in the first semifinal at Santa Clara High and top-seeded Archbishop Mitty ousting Los Gatos 25-20, 25-16, 25-18 in the second.
